~NOW, Darwin was not very accustomed to open spaces. He rather liked the quiet swinging of the branches and the rustle of grass with the wind whispering into his ears, and the criss-crossing of the hard-packed dirt paths winding through the miles of green meadows and sparse foliage, but he wasn't used to being all by his lonesome. He yearned for pressure at his side and the warmth of the crowd surrounding him like a heavy haze. After all, he had grown up in Paris-although most of his time there was spent staggering in the the narrow alleys avoiding pickpockets or sitting in cafe's sipping a cup of sugared coffee with a croissant on his plate staring out the windows at the people scuttling by. He always tipped the men strumming guitars on the streets and would often retire to a ditch in a wide alley to eat his lunch, different every day, and take a nap. Darwin shook his head. His feet were blistered through his boots and his trousers were chafing his legs. His tousled hair was falling over his eyes. His legs were clammy from trodding through the endless greenery. He finally stumbled over a gnarled tree root and crumpled to the ground under the sparse shade of the branches. Darwin sighed with relief as he lay sprawled on the ground, drinking in the shade. He sucked down a bit of water and splashed the rest on the back of his neck, closing his eyes until he fell into a light, blissful sleep.
